Tuesdays With Dorie
TWD has become "Whatever Day With Dorie" for me. I actually made the plum cake on Tuesday, took some pictures, ate half the cake for dessert, then fooled around with more pictures on Wednesday. As is John's weekly custom, he got to take the leftovers to work that week. Those lucky guys. I feed them well don't I?
Michelle from Bake-En has chosen the Dimply Plum Cake for this weeks...er, last weeks recipe! You can find the recipe on page 41 in Dorie Greenspan's book, Baking: From My Home To Yours. Michelle has also typed it out on her blog for you to follow.
Dorie's Dimply Plum Cake???
Why on earth would Dorie name this cake "Dimply Plum Cake"? The name is just so...I don't have a word for it, so I'll just call it Plum Cake! I suppose it's because, as it bakes, the plums settle down into the cake and make "dimples". My German mother-in-law would call it Zwetschgenkuchen, (not sure of the spelling?) which is just another name for - you guessed it - Plum Cake! It was a quick and easy recipe to make. Very simple and very understated. It definitely needed something though. I sprinkled confectioners' sugar over the top. I made some homemade whipped cream. I even swirled some raspberry jam on the plate. By that time, it was just right!
Plums, Plums & More Plum Desserts
I used the small Italian Prune plums. They're super easy to halve and pit. I left the skins on, less work. I didn't have any cardamom, so I used nutmeg instead. I love nutmeg, so it was a good choice! I think the cake would have been prettier in a fluted pan or a mini springform pan, but I used the standard 8" X 8" pan that Dorie suggested. Still, looks aside, it tasted good and John liked it. They do say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I guess I've proven that right!

Your cake turns out beautifully. I am having a dimply plum cake cooling on the rack now. But my plum halves have sunken too much into the batter!

As a foodie and a photographer I have a question - do you shoot all the pics yourself? What camera do you use?
