"Danger, Will Robinson!"
Remember the long-running sci-fi TV show, Lost In Space? I sure do. The year was 1965, and we had a brand new black and white television. I waited patiently, or should I say impatiently, each week for my favorite show, Lost In Space! I was usually outside playing, but when that timer rang, I wasted no time! There was no way to record Lost In Space, so if I missed it, it was gone for good! Forget the reruns! To a skinny little kid like me, that was an eternity!
One of my favorite characters of the show was strangely enough, The Robot! He was dressed the same each week in his cheesy silver suit with arms that reminded me of ginourmous slinkys. Remember those? Anyway...during my kid years, I thought The Robot WAS real! I had no idea there was actually a real man in that suit! It's like finding out Santa Claus wasn't real! Sheesh! What a let-down!
When the remake of the movie came out in 1998, I was all excited for a bit of new space-age special effects and alien torture. But most of all, I waited to see what the New and Improved Robot would look like. I was sooooo disappointed. Sure, he was a huge, formidable protector of the newest Robinson family, but he just wasn't the same. I missed the old tacky robot. I guess robots grow up too, just like I had!
Every now and then, years later, the warning "Danger, Will Robinson!" still echoes in my memory. I say it from time to time for the silliest of reasons and fondly remember The Robot. Good by Robot, and thanks Bob May for making a thousands of kids happy in the 1960's. I know, I was one of them!
