Julie Powell & Julia Child
The movie, Julia & Julia, staring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci is coming out August 7th - so I figured I better brush up on the book and see who's who. You see, I've been writing about the book and now the movie, but I never really read the book until now! Oh, I'd heard about it way back when, when Julie Powell started the Julie Julia Project. It seemed interesting enough. I thought, hmmmm, I could do that! But then I thought long and hard about it, and realized I live on a sailboat. And at the time, it was a 30 foot sailboat, not much bigger than your average walk-in closet or bathroom! The fact that my stove had only 2 burners, and my oven wouldn't hold anything close to resembling a 12 pound chicken, didn't have anything to do with it!
OK, that was out. So, what did I do instead? I sat on it - my butt that is! I let that, and ideas like it, fall overboard. Can you imagine where I'd be now if I'd let my passion loose? Oh well, on to the next thing. And that's where this blog - my attempt at creative expression, my labor of love - comes in. Let's call the movie Donna & Julia instead!
Getting back to the book - I'm only half way through it, and I can say that although the book is extremely engaging (read, can't put it down!), it's not meant for kids that haven't heard foul language. There's plenty of that in there. I guess Julie was expressing her voice as well as her outpouring of culinary creativity. If you're looking for a cookbook, look elsewhere. Buy Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, the cookbook that started it all.
Julie & Julia Movie
Guess where I - and millions of other obsessed foodies - will be on August 7th? In the theaters watching Meryl Streep portray Julia Child. And if she's any bit as good as the trailer makes her out to be, we're in for a real treat. I can soooo see her as Julia! Although Julia was 6' 2" tall, Meryl Streep is under 6 feet. But thanks to the wonders of Hollywood's special effects, any one can be as tall or short (remember the Hobbits?) as they want to be. Hey, I want to take off some pounds and about 10 years. Maybe I should go to Hollywood! They can do that right?
BIG GIVEAWAY!
So, watch the trailer, then go read the articles I wrote on Kelly, from Sounding My Barbaric Gulp, and look at all the photos of her trip, Kelly Goes to LA! What a lot of fun she had schmoozing with the pretty people in Hollywood! Also, Kelly and Sony Pictures is giving away copies of Julie Powell's novel, Julie & Julia AND Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking (vol. 1), which Kelly is giving away to one reader! The deadline for comments is Tuesday. That's tomorrow! So better run on over and put your name in the hat! I'll see you at the movies!

I loved the book - can't wait to see the movie!
